The stigma associated with mental health is a pervasive phenomenon all over the world, especially so in our land. Research by the WHO has shown that all over the world, 1 in 4 people will experience a mental health issue any given year. In India, reports have shown that at least 6.5 per cent of the Indian population suffers from some form of a
serious mental disorder, with no discernible rural-urban differences.
The shortage of mental health professionals and the apprehension surrounding the subject has contributed to further complications. A grave fact shows that the Indian government spends less than 33 paisa on a mental health sufferer, which is just 0.05% of the annual healthcare budget, making this a starling fact for a nation which accounts for over a billion people. It further doesn’t help when we realise that there’s only one medical professional per lakh for treating mental illnesses in our nation.
